After an especially bleak start to the day with some short-lived snow in East London, the clouds parted magically to produce a bright sunny afternoon just in time for the Mini Mermaid 5K Challenge in the picturesque Weavers Fields. Stefan summed it -up very nicely as "London - 3 seasons in one day!"
Due to the earlier inclement weather one of the two primary schools had unfortunately dropped out, so we were faced with a smaller than expected number of mini mermaids to accompany on their challenge. However, those that showed up were especially resolute in their attitude to tackling the distance.
Each of the mini mermaids was paired up with one of the four of us GoodGym volunteers, with a few adults from the school and the wonderful Khara floating around offering up considerable encouragement to each of them as they tackled their individual challenge of covering the 5000 kilometres in whatever manner they chose.
The course was a delightful 1KM lap of the park, which was mostly solid underfoot despite the earlier deluge of rain. Each of the mini mermaids tackled the course with aplomb, and were no doubt bouyed by the enthusiasm and support they each receiving along the way.
They were cheered on by some illustrious guests including Rob from London Sport who was tasked with administering high fives using a massive foam hand at the end of each lap, and Tower Hamlets Mayor, John Biggs was on hand at the end to congratulate each of the participants and present them with their incredibly well deserved certificates and medals!
