Painting (New)town red! Or was it yellow...?

Tuesday 1st October 2019

Written by Klara Kjellgren

13 runners braved the blustery and rainy weather to run 3 k, to help Newtown Primary School with painting their school hall yellow. They painted town red as well by taking part in some fantastic looking run drills right in the city center, cheered on by lots of students walking past!

We started our evening with a dynamic warm up session, engaging all major muscle groups from head to toe. Our lovely Sarah didn't do any star jumps this evening either, but we are hoping that she will do some by Christmas!

The evening was surprisingly mild after all the rain that had been pouring down during the day and it felt so nice to stretch out and run towards our task, Newtown Primary School. The atmosphere was great too; everyone was laughing and chatting. It is absolutely lovely to see so many friendships forming within our run group. Thank you Helen who back marked so that no-one got left behind. Helen has also joined task force and will help us out with social events, social media and community missions. Great stuff!

When we arrived to Newtown Primary School we were welcomed by Sally, the head teacher, who explained that the school consist of three Victorian buildings but that they struggle to get enough fundings for the upkeep of the buildings, as the amount of children in the catchment area is rather low. The fact that we could come along in a big group like this really helped them out!

Sally showed us which walls to paint in the school hall and we quickly got stuck in, painting the peach walls in a bright yellow. We worked hard for 45 minutes and managed to complete the whole painting job! It looked so bright and lovely when we were done, a huge improvement! Super work everyone!

The children will be so surprised to come in to school tomorrow and find their hall in a new bright yellow colour!

When we left the school we were all very excited to start our return run with some hill sprints (or at least your hill-loving run trainer was very excited about this!). The hill sprints really got our lungs and legs working! SUCH GOOD EFFORT EVERYONE!

We then headed over to Princess Hay were we showed off the GoodGym in style by carrying out some great run drills, including walking skips, quick step running, forward and lateral lunge walk, squat jumps and hops, to mention a few. We got some lovely cheers from students walking past on their way from a freshers party.. but I am pretty sure we had the most fun of everyone!

Next week we are heading to St Thomas area for the first time to carry out some litter picking in the parks. Local residents are very unhappy with all the littering there so it is fantastic that we can help them out with this. Your work will be very appreciated! The run is 5 k in total and perfect for all abilities. It will also be time for our monthly core session, so don’t miss out - come along and get fit by going good and tell all your friends about it too! Sign up here, it will be fab!

To finish of with I have to say it again- YOU ARE ALL AMAZING! You run so well, you worked so hard on those hill sprints and you got stuck right in at the task. Together we made a HUGE DIFFERENCE! Let's keep up the good work and get fit by doing good! Can’t wait to see you all again next week! A big thank you to the Westbank for making the GoodGym possible in our area and for the Phoenix for being our starting point.
