Painting and Planting - improving the National Cycle Network in York
Sustrans is a UK walking and cycling charity and custodian of the National Cycle Network. Our Volunteers are our eyes and ears out on these popular routes. They could do with some extra pairs of hands to help them improve the area for people to enjoy whilst walking, running or cycling.

6 GoodGymers have supported Sustrans York East Volunteers with 1 task.

The sweet scent of Eau De Himalayan Balsam

Thursday 20th July 2023

Written by York runner

GoodGym teamed up with Sustrans volunteers for some Thursday therapy - also known as balsam bashing. For those who don't know, Himalayan Balsam is an invasive species destroying our river beds and disrupting our habitats. It is a seemingly never ending task but one that is mightily therapeutic.

In one short hour we managed to bash the balsam overtaking the riverside path, clearing the way for the many cyclists, runners and walkers using the path. In some areas the Balsam had reached great heights but this didn't scare us away and soon we got to work creating a huge pile of bashed Balsam.

Keep on the look out for more upcoming Balsam Bashing missions to get involved with...
