Overtaking and undertaking

Saturday 13th September

Written by Bournemouth runner

Seven Goodgymmers, Chloe, James, Janet, Eleanor, Daryl, Keith and Lea turned to walk lead the Walk for Wards again this year. Off to have our faces painted again, and with raincoats to the ready we were raring to go. A bit of chaos with a shortened walk schedule, a different starting order and the wrong signs and missing signs…. Oh well, overtaking or undertaking, as long as we don’t lose anyone and people are having fun, we are ok with that. Lea walked back for a bit and found this “lonely straggler”, oops, no, it was Backmarker for the 8k Keith! So yay, that was the very end, so we were off to the food stand, which was incredibly well organised with a nice burger for everyone. And with a little pink and purple balloon wand for baby Coral in the pushchair and a balloon rabbit for Lea (long story!!) we were all happy to have taken part again in this year’s Walk for Wards. Thank you to everyone that turned up and to the weather gods for keeping the sun shining for us most of the time. Hope to see you all again next year.

Marshalling the March

Saturday 29th March

Written by Bournemouth runner

Daryl greeted us at the start point for the March for Men, but feeling awful… he had to go back home to bed. That left Keith and Lea to represent Goodgym as marshalls for the March for Men. What a perfect day for it. Our marshalling point was the turning point for the 5k. We set off in our high vis jackets with our sign and our cow bells. The first runner turned up 9 mins after the start, yikes, running past us to do the 10k. Then more runners and more walkers turned up, some turning round, visibly relieved to see the turning point signs. Lots of high fives, lots of smiles, lots of thumbs up and even a red rose from a lion for Lea! Kudos to all the people doing their bit for prostate cancer. Not many photos as we were too busy ringing our bells. Fun fact: On our way back home we saw the partial eclipse of the sun....

Slowly does it

Saturday 28th September 2024

Written by Bournemouth runner

Nine Goodgymmers, Chloe, James, Luke, Millie, Sophie, Eleanor, Daryl, Keith and Lea, were ready and raring to go walk leading the Walk for Wards at 9 o’clock this morning…. Eh, well, the organisers had failed to mention that the actual walks didn’t start till 11 o’clock! Goodgymmers being Goodgymmers filled the time with reading about the queen, about rocks and minerals, and happily chatting away, admiring the bubble machine and getting some faces painted. The Star studded lawn, with Captain America, Mary Poppins, the Incredible Hulk, Resident Evil (eh who?!?!), Snowwhite, Sulley, Ghostbusters …. added a bit more entertainment, although Millie, Sophie, Luke and Eleanor were nearly drawn to “The Dark Side”! Nope, didn’t happen: ready for the off first were Sophie, Millie, Eleanor and Luke, leading the 10k walk. Closely followed by Daryl and Lea walk leading the 5k with Keith as a backmarker. Last but not least Chloe and James set off to lead the 3k walk. My oh my, was it sloooow going! What didn’t help was a lady thinking she was walking the 3k , but she was in the 10k group. Luckily we managed to point her to the right group. And there were many people of such varying abilities. Kudos to the old guy in the 5k pushing a lady in a wheelchair all the way round! Seeing why and who people were walking for was really impressive. The 10k walk all the way to the Asda roundabout and back got a little “long in the tooth” and James not getting through to the organisers emergency numbers were a tad tedious (read: annoying/frightening)! But with the weather Gods providing us with bluer than blue skies, we were all happy to have completed another Goodgym task! Thanks everyone!
