Pedal to the Nettles

Luton Report written by David Mansfield

In the last of a summer series of dual-task group sessions, our team was split with a walking/biking group heading to the Penrose Roots to Recovery garden and a running group heading to Holy Trinity Church.

The team's task in the garden was to tackle a patch of stinging nettles that had taken over a storage area behind the polytunnel. Kitted out with shears and rakes we worked from each end to meet in the middle, uncovering lost garden supplies in the process and filling two big bags with compost fodder.

Meanwhile the running group's task at the church was to give the railings a second coat of paint to finish the task we'd worked on over the summer stripping and repainting.

It's the time of year that darkness is creeping in so we had a dark journey back into town. Don't forget your lights for next week's run!

Let's Get Ready To Rubble!

Luton Report written by David Mansfield

This week was the final pre-season visit to 61FC for a last effort to smarten up this football club's grounds and clubhouse.

After a good walk/run/bike to the Kingsway Recreation Ground we met Richard and Cliff who had several tasks for us. We cleared up the rubble behind the clubhouse and added to a pile generated by nearby work to add a new footpath to the park. Meanwhile we had a four person ladder/painting team scraping the old blue paint from the fascia boards and painting them bright white instead.

While all that was going on we also cleaned up some chalky doodles on the walls, painted some of the railings gloss blue, leveled a mound of old woodchip on the grass and had a good sweep up around the building.

So many tasks but with a strong team we got it all done in time to enjoy some strong orange squash and Quality Streets to fuel our journey back into town.

Good Deeds not Weeds

Luton Report written by David Mansfield

This week we had two tasks on offer again as we continue to make the most of the good summer weather.

The walking group headed off to meet new task owner Rajab from the Safer Luton Partnership, supported by Kevin from ABCD luton who provided tools. The task was to clean up the communal garden at a sheltered housing block so that the residents can regain control and start looking after the place themselves and enjoy growing nice plants instead of weeds.

Meanwhile a combined running and biking team headed out to the distant Bradley Road allotment where previous clear ups have brought this allotment back into a tidy state nearly ready for new allotment tenants. Our task this time was to clean up the entrance area and the access road of the litter and fly-tipped bundles of tree branches to make the approach more attractive. bollards will be installed on the track to prevent.

When both tasks were complete each team headed back into town under the glow of a sunset rainbow ๐ŸŒˆ to complete the evening.

Nice and Cheesy Does it

Luton Report written by Gill (She/her)

three of Luton's GoodGymers turned out to help at FoodCycle today despite the heat to ensure there was still a meal provided to anyone who wanted one.

Gill had turned up in the morning to make pastry cases as she had been given a donation if several kilos of vegan cheese earlier in the week. She then came back to lead the kitchen team having already stopped off at Sainsburys to collect the food surplus. She was soon busy whipping up 7 cheese and pepper quiches and a tasty salad. She also bought a recipe for Jordi to make mushroom pรขtรฉ which incorporated some cottage cheese and gave some advice to Winston in hiw to make a fruit salad. Abdo and Derrick arrived later and ready to set out the tables, greet the guests and start to serve the delicious 3 course meal. And when it was all finished they then cleared up, washed up and tidied the hall. Another successful if cheesy meal.

No ducking out of this task

Luton Report written by Martin R

Today 6 of Luton Goodgym's finest helped the Friends of Leagrave Park with thier monthly community litterpick. The team was joined by members of the local community and Kevin from ABCD-IN-LUTON. We helped to collect around 20 bags of litter, part of a car engine, a bike wheel, a child buggy and of course the somewhat obligatory shopping trolley. Pam got a lovely picture of some ducks in the river enjoying a swim on a hot day, we could have all got in but people might have thought we were quackers The park looked much tidier for our efforts. Well done today team ๐Ÿ‘ fantastic effort ๐Ÿ‘Œ
