One, two, three, four, tell me what this table's for

Lambeth Report written by Katie Welford

This week we were heading to the brilliant Portico Gallery to help sort some tables out that are used for the West Norwood Feast.

There were 37 people, which is an impressive turn out for a solid 8km round trip. After a nice warm up we headed off up the hills to the Portico. On arrival, there were some issues with the outdoor lights but those of us with headtorches got them on and we were able to get to work.

The tables needed to be graded on a scale of 1-4 from Good to BAD. The BAD ones needed fixing by John ahead of the first Feast in a few weeks time. Ruth, Vix and Lucy were the X Factor Table Judges and the rest of the runners worked in pairs to take their table for judgement before adding it to the correct pile. It was a beautiful circle of table judging excellence and in no time everything had been grouped and was ready to be put back on the metal crates ready for fixing or not.

A slightly more downhill run back to base was followed by stretches and a trip to the pub for our monthly social visit. Nice!

Thanks to Tom Hunter for the inspiration behind the title and this jazzy number by Feist.

Jungle Gym

Lambeth Report written by Katie Welford

It was a milder evening than we have had and that was GREAT NEWS for Lambeth, as this week both our tasks were outside. Before we set off, we welcomed new trainer Char, who will surely do great things up in Liverpool. We also gave much cheers to Sarah, for getting her 100 good deeds t-shirt. TOP WORK SARAH!

Group 1 ran the well-trodden 8km round trip up to the Portico Gallery in West Norwood. The job was to finish sorting out gazebo covers that we started before Christmas. It turns out that GoodGym Lambeth was not satisfied with the initial job and so did the whole thing again! John and Methusula the cat were very happy.

Group 2 ran to a new task - Katie went on a slightly funny route there but it was around 1.5km each way. The Grove Adventure Playground has been saved from demolition and is now being seriously spruced up so it can be used again. This is good news as it's a seriously fun place to hang out! There were swings, big slides and wooden walkways galore. We had a lot of woodchip to spread out and so got to work. One group went outside with Katie to do some nice strengthening of our ankles and calves and then we all swapped. The last 10 minutes saw a frantic rush of wheelbarrows and shovels. Then lots of people went down the big steep slide very fast!

Once we were all back to base we did some stretches and headed off on our first monthly pub night of the year. It was all very nice and big thanks to task force member Sarah for organising - she is heading off on some adventures for a while and we will miss her!

Tree-Total

Lambeth Report written by Katie Welford

40 excellent people carried many sad Christmas trees to be recycled, clearing the paths of Lambeth so everyone can walk free!

It was our first run back and it was a corker. We had lots of lovely old faces and also some really lovely new faces too. There was a fine mist shower as we set off in three groups to hunt down the lost and left behind trees of Christmas past. Left out on the street, these spiky shrubs get in the way of pushchairs and wheelchair users and are generally a bit of a pain.

Each group was covering a different area and in no time we had all collected many a Spruce. With a walk / waddle / carry and huff we got them all up to Clapham Common and dropped them at the recycling depot. HOORAY!

And with that mighty and handy task finished, we ran back to base for stretches. Top work Lambeth!

Squatting Santas

Barnet Report written by Pennie Varvarides

This week 16 wonderful GG-ers ran 4.5km (ish) delivering booklets for our fabulous hosts, The Phoenix. Most were kitted in their Santa hats / outfits, with Graham even riding a reindeer. Paul came armed with extra outfits, including a Santa dress – which Hazel wore with pride.

We were joined by GG newbie tonight, Heather – who moved to London to marry Shawn! Give them both a cheer!

After a quick warm up by the side, we ran off up the hill. After about 1.5km of running, we split into teams and began the leap frog flyering. Damian took one team, while I took the other. We had four bags full of the booklets – and as ever, made quick work of the lot!

Then it was time for a quick fitness session, starting with squats, burpees and lunges; and finishing with a race to 100 step ups on the curb. Graham was the speediest, very quickly followed by Sarah.

Damian then lead us back to base, while Freya and Rupesh took charge of the back-marking.

We then did all the stretches before heading upstairs at the Phoenix for our Christmas celebrations. There were many snacks, some even homemade, and a surprise appearance from Eleanor.

Tonight was Danica's last GG Barnet run before she leaves the country forever (or for ages) to go traveling. Give her all of the cheers and the virtual hugs

Thank you all for a wonderful year of GG Barnet-ing. Next week will be our final run - but I won't be able to make it. You'll be guest lead by the wonderful Camden Paul. See you all in the NEW YEAR!

Leaf it on the hill

Barnet Report written by Paul Bown

9 GoodGymers ran 6-7km, delivered 150 leaflets for Syrian Refugee & smashed a fitness session!

Lovely to be leading GG Barnet again, you guys are great! The weather was getting wetter all day, thank you for coming along and doing good - means a lot.

Of course a massive well done to Pennie who conquered New York Marathon last Sunday, absolutely amazing work! Give her a cheer when you see her next Tuesday. In other news:

  1. It's the last GG Monthly Drinks of the year tomorrow (Thursday 9th) in Stratford - come along!
  2. There is gonna be a GG 2018 Calendar, check it out here on the facebook group.
  3. GG Raceteam are taking part in Cross-Country this weekend, three more fixtures in the season if you want to join #RedThunder

Right onto to last night, after our intro and chat about upcoming Barnet missions, like this one, we headed off into the night - taking to the back streets to Muswell Hill and into the residential area close to Ally Pally. Splitting into pairs we covered roads in the area to spread the word about a new Syrian Refuge Charity in Finchley.

The event we were promoting was a Syrian Kitchen fundraiser on 30th November, a lovely local event to help a brilliant cause. With all the leaflets distributed we took a group pic before heading back into the night.

Ally Pally fun!

Running over to Ally Pally the rain was getting a little harder but of course that doesn't put off these hardcore Barnetites. Fitness session included:

  • Two sets of shuttle runs using lamposts as a marker
  • Squats & balancing exercises
  • Distance shuttles, for 10 seconds & then 5 seconds

Always brilliant to do speed sessions in groups! After our 2km run home we stretched out and said our goodbyes. Well done all, lovely wet evenings running & good-doing.

Sign up for Barnet next week here, Pennie is back!

PB out.

A chip off the old block

Barnet Report written by Pennie Varvarides

This week 12 GoodGym-ers ran 4km to shift sawdust and sweep leaves in a local park.

We started with intros at the Phoenix as always. I mentioned that there are 10 coaches in waiting for runners - so if you're interested in visiting one of those people, please do complete your coach runner training so you can get the ball rolling!

Shout out to our two new Task Forcers: Nicola and PaulGive 'em a cheer!

Damian lead us to the Northway Gardens while Graham was our trusty back-marker.

Brian was waiting for us with two cars full of tools and leaves, ready for shifting. We split into teams to grab all the things and head through the park to our drop off point. Luckily, there were many of us with lights, as the gardens had no lights. We are now running in full-blown darkness, so I really recommend getting yourself a head torch. My fancy hand light was from Morrisons - £7. My head torch from Poundland no longer stays on my head – but still makes light and fits in my palm.

We shifted many wheelbarrows full of sawdust from the chopped down trees from around their stumps so the people could come back and finish the job. We also swept many leaves into buckets for compost.

We'll be back on 7 November to do the next bit. Be sure to sign up!

We then played Duck Tag and Squat Runs on the tennis courts, where we discovered Paul and Nicola are incredibly spry.

We soon ran home, with a little sprint finish UP the hill. Props to Graham and Jack for being so speedy!

Next week we've had a change of plan - We'll be running to the WDP not Community Focus. 3km each way.

A dig for victory - One year of Good Deeds

Hammersmith and Fulham Report written by Polly Skeats-Beswick

It's our birthday

This week marked the 1st anniversary for Goodgym Hammersmith & Fulham. The group has perform over 50 good deeds in one year. And one runner has been to every single one! Our Taskforce member Jason

Weed sort out the problem

After a briefing and a warm-up, we headed off to Askham Court, a council owner sheltered housing property for the over 60's to help weed a big overgrown flower bed.

Upon our arrival we were met by some of the residents who help direct us to the task in hand. The gang grabbed the gloves, tools and bags and quickly got to work. They had to tackle a tricky combination of brambles and bindweed to free the lavender and roses.

After packing up and saying goodbye to the residents we headed off back to base.

Will take the long way home

After 2 km, Will took a fast group on a long route home and I lead a direct route back.

After a warm down, we head off to Draught House for a birthday dinner. Party hats were worn, balloons inflated and a tasty dinner eaten.

A route canal isn't as bad as you think

Ealing Report written by Liv Parker-Scott

With the summer holidays in full swing, tonight we were a small group but we still packed a punch and got a lot done between us!

We started our run tonight with a warm up jog down to Walpole for a running technique and drills session before the main event. This consisted of a number of different exercises designed to get our bodies ready for running including some very graceful looking horse style kicking (I promise this is a real running drill!).

We then set off to run to the Elthorne Park stretch of canal on the River Brent where reunited with the wonderful Jack from The Canal & River Trust. This was our second task on this part of the canal and it was great to be back even though it did look like someone had recently had a cider party there and forgot to take all their rubbish home!

Jack split us into two groups, one to tackle an overgrown buddleia bush and make the canal safer for passing cycles and pedestrians and one to paint over the unsightly graffiti on the underpass. Andy, Emily and Larissa were quick to express their interest in painting which involved some lovely boiler suits. It was a strong look guys!

Ronan, Mike and Alex put their hands up to saw and shear the vegetation growing over the towpath whilst I did some ad hoc litter picking between checking on the groups and taking photos, afterwards it was like the cider party had never happened.

Jack always comes really well prepared when he meets us with lots of tools and a number of different tasks we can complete in the location, however the one thing he did forget this week was a wet paint sign! Therefore we've made a little make shift wet paint sign which we will return to paint over next time!

With a good nights work complete we did an Indian file running session to get back to base for a quick stretch and cool down.

Thank you all for coming, every one of you guys are great but special mention this week goes to our visitor Andy from GoodGym Hounslow whose on a mission to get to 50 good deeds before his Wandsworth (friendly) rival! We were deed number 41 on the list so it's getting close now, good luck Andy hopefully see you back with us soon (or will your rival use us to get their numbers up too?!).

Next week we are heading to Ealing Food Bank to help with a bit of maintenance and you can sign up here.

See you next time, happy running :)
