Carpet Diem

Islington Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

Goodgym Islington were invited to a new task this evening - always a joy to receive a referral for our help! The crew met up on Holloway Road to catch up before meeting up with Sandy, one of the key helpers at Pollard Close Allotments (great job to Alison and Caitlin for helping in Kentish Town, and to Matt for assisting in Thornhill Square last weekend).

Together we were led through a wiggly pedestrianised passage over to a nondescript metal door. On the other side was a hidden collection of 28 allotment beds formed out of a former car-park next to an electric substation- amazing! Sandy showed us over to a large couple of composting bins, ready to cultivate new soil for planting in Spring. Our task for the night was to make a start on moving all of the freshly rotted compost into builder's merchant bags, and to tip the semi-rotted compost into a new bin- keeping a rotation in motion. The plan is to encourage the rest of the local gardeners to complete the job, after making a solid start this evening.

The team did a smashing job of digging out the compost as best they could- while also finding huge spiders, brightly coloured millipedes, parsnips, russet potatoes and swathes of carpet lodged in between the soil and mulch. All of the vegetables were collected up and distributed between the group for roast dinner additions and winter stews. Within 45 minutes, we successfully filled 1 and a half tonne bags of new compost, ready for planting.

An excellent job well done on a Monday evening- great stuff!

We’ed got bamboo-zled? Don’t you be-leaf it!

Camden Report written by John Shirley

Leaves can cause even cars and trains to slip and slide, so imagine the hazard they might pose ankle-deep on a sloping path in the grounds of a retirement home.

This was the situation when we arrived at Ashdown Crescent, but we soon set to work and filled so many bags with leaves. There was also weeding to do, and bamboo to rip out from the fence, which Nivia set to with great enthusiasm.

Meanwhile, task owner Paul was keen to tell us about the book he’s writing, of his experiences acting in the West End and ITV dramas.

A special welcome to Tam, who I've met in other GoodGym areas, and is now living in Camden, so no doubt we’ll see her again soon. Also, welcome Andy (with his magic camera!) to the ranks of the GoodGym Camden Task Force!

Hoovers and Movers

Islington Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

On a brisk Monday evening (super Autumnal!), Area Activator Simon caught up with Dan and Emily at the Arsenal Community Hub for a lovely run towards Archway, heading North on Sussex Way. After a dynamic warm up and a chat, we made our way up to Caxton House Community Centre on foot.

We met with Rose, one of the key coordinators at Caxton House who treated our running crew to biscuits and water! Our task for the evening was to pack up about 30+ duvets and pillows into vacuum bags, and to shrink them down into portable sizes, ready for various clothing bank projects across the borough. Half of our team helped with packing the bags and ensuring the right contents were added to the correct packs. And the other half of our team used a couple of "Henry Hoovers" to squeeze down the materials to a packable size.

Well done everyone- we did a smashing job of a very satisfying job. Excellent quality control!
