Redbridge Report written by James Poole
On a pleasant summer's evening, 11 of Goodgym's finest runners met to plog near the river and some even ran 10km in the process!
Another great week at Goodgym Redbridge with two new runners - welcome Sophie and Valeria - and Sharon returning to the fold after some time off with an annoying injury.
Cleaning up the waterways around London has become increasingly popular in recent weeks and various Goodgym areas have been hard at work making their boroughs better places to live. After some discussions with the Environment Agency - who manage the rivers in the borough - it was agreed that the team would head out to Wanstead Park to do what they could around that stretch of the River Roding.
Arm with litter pickers, bin bags and gloves the team split into two groups - Dharmesh leading the longer run group and Peter heading off with the short run crew. The aim was for both groups to run to a point on the river and see how much litter could be collected.
With the long run group heading to Wanstead Flats and Manor Park, this gave the short run crew a head start and they were soon collecting the usual collection of beer cans, drinks bottles and crisp packets. Dharmesh's team who ran almost 7km to the meeting point were soon also working away and before long bin bags were filled with masses of waste.
The run back through Wanstead Park provided suitable repositories for the rubbish bags and before long the team were home at base for some easy stretching to prevent any aches and pains.
Next week, we are staying local Wanstead House Community Centre to remove ivy from some of the trees in the garden. This one is gonna be tough so if you fancy a good workout then sign up using the link on the right hand side of this page!
