Report written by Beth Nelson
Beth, Cookie, Tom and Louisa met White City Hub Manager, Saba, to help move some local donations and with a 'blitz' of their stockroom. The Hub @75 is a Community Organisation supporting local residents with emergency food parcels, welfare advice and more! It is also home of the White City branch of Hammersmith & Fulham Foodbank.
Cookie and Tom began by helping Saba, with moving lots of donations and boxes from a local church down to the Hub@75 while Beth and Louisa began the stockroom 'blitz'.
Beth and Louisa started off by tidying up the huge shopping bag pile, they were taught the 'samosa' folding technique and attempted to replicate this on the hundreds of plastic bags...some were more successful than others! Once all the bags had been neatly folded and placed in the crates they moved on to sorting the cereals and soup tins.
Louisa with her superior height passed down the cereal boxes to Beth who checked the best before and expiry dates on each box. Those that were passed their best before or expiry date were placed in one pile on the floor while those with a 2021 date were placed in another. Once the cereals had been checked they moved onto the soup tins, Beth took the vegetable soups while Louisa sorted the meat soups. As there were so many tins they found it easier to remove the tins from the shelf and check the best before and expiry dates on the floor. To ensure efficient stock rotation with minimal wastage both the cereal boxes and tins with the longest best before or expiry dates were placed to the back of the shelves.
After 90 minutes of tidying and sorting we called it a day and said our goodbyes to Saba. We look forward to helping out again next month!
