Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice
Last night, we enjoyed a lovely summer's evening of gardening at Thornhill Square Gardens. It was also the first time we needed to bring out the headtorches and flood lights this year!
8 keen volunteers joined us for our task (including a few new starters- welcome to Anna, Rebecca and Sara). Four of us also ran 1.2 miles from our new "group run" start point and bag drop location at The Packington Gallery, Prebend Street.
Upon our arrival, we met up with Christopher, our task coordinator, and we got straight to work! Job 1 involved thinning out a big patch of teasel plant bushes, which had become a bit overgrown. We were instructed to leave about 10% of them behind, as the goldfinches like them! We chopped then down to manageable size, and we used a wheelbarrow to deposit the green waste to a composting bed.
Job 2 involved picking out thistles from another plant bed, using a hoe to loosen the roots and shift them out of the dry ground. Trainer Simon also helped with a bit of plant watering, while snapping pictures of Goodgymmers in action!
We made some significant progress on this big task- all being well, we'll be back soon to finish the job. Well done folks!b
'A quiet oasis off Caledonian Road. Plenty of space (it is the largest square in Islington) to picnic, rest, read, admire the flowers shrubs and trees, and walk a dog. Volunteers, with the council are working to encourage healthy activities, including walking and yoga, and also to improve the diversity of wildlife in the park.'
