It was Sam's first Thorland's session in a month after taking three Saturday's off. It was great to see the progress and growth in the "Walled" and "Forest" gardens.
Sam was initially joined by Lucie from midday as their first task was to fix the polytunnel in the "Forest" garden as the recent winds had battered it. We took over a couple of bricks to weigh down the polytunnel cover.
Once we were satisfied that the cover would stay on, Lucie and Sam split off to do two tasks. Lucie had to shovel "Pro-Growth" soil from a tonne bag that was delivered outside the "Walled" garden into another tonne bag near the compost heap. Whilst Sam helped transfer and empty one compost heap to fill it in the third compost heap. During this time, Jessie made an appearance and got stuck in with the next task, which was to clear the bricks that we had stacked a couple of weeks ago off the wall. These bricks would be used to make a small brick oven, but we're not quite ready for that task, so they needed to be stored elsewhere as the wall needed to be used to install pallets for vertical planting.
As Sam finished off the compost heap, he joined Jessie to finish off the brick task and during that time; TJ appeared! It was TJ's first ever GoodGym good deed, so we welcomed him in and he apologised for being late as he got lost....which is very very common for first-timers attending Thorlands, so not to worry TJ. He assisted Lucie, who had completed moving the "Pro-Growth" soil and was on her third task of the day - emptying the damaged planters. Lucie and TJ ensured the plants in the planters were saved first before emptying the soil into a tonne bag. There was one planter that was screwed into a pallet, so Simon brought out his power tools and Jessie was up for using the electric screwdriver to take out one screw. However, she got a bit carried away and started unscrewing other screws from the pallet...screwed up...👀
After emptying all the damaged planters and putting the soil in the tonne bag, these were put away to one side as we wrapped up the session.
After a couple of group photos, Simon gifted us with a kindly prepared bags of leafy greens. TJ stayed behind to help out with the final task - potting the tree saplings (that are growing), which we saved from the "Forest" garden about over a month ago. Great work team and looking forward to continuing with the project and vision next Saturday!
