Report written by Joel Wiles
26 GoodGymers ran 6.5k to Hackney Wick community Garden to help bed the garden down for winter.
Great to have so many of friendly running faces along for the ride tonight! We started off the evening welcoming our new faces to the squad, congratulating Anna and Jack on their Half and full Marathon running exploits at the weekend. Then we presented newly aerodynamically hair styled Rich with a very well earned 50 Good Deed t-shirt.
A little dynamic warm up to get the body going before we set off taking the 3.5k Victoria Park route down to the river and the Hackney Wick community garden.
Meeting Kirsty and the other volunteers we were split up into multiple groups to work our GoodGym magic!! With a hive of activity going on with pumpkins and other produce being run to various flats around the estate where they will cooked up into food for the community. We had watering, pruning in the polly tunnel, tomato picking for chutney as well as burning all Blight riddled tomatoes to stop it spreading. We had net makers condensing off the garden, while woodsmen hacked small branches down into fire wood. The fallow area of the garden where we have ripped up carpet, turned over soil in previous visits was ready to be prepared for some growing action! Digging up, weeding, filling holes, pulling up roots to produce a fantastic vegetable patch ready for action!!
With the light gone, rain coming down and biscuits nibbled we headed back on the direct route back to base with a job well done!!
A strong 3k run back, nice stretch out then 17 of us headed down to Broadway market for a Pizza and beverage!! Great evening, top food 3 marathon promises all organised by Task Force Social sec Tom.
Next week we are off to Abney Park, always great fun there!! If you have a head torch bring it along, if not maybe think about picking up a cheap one.
Have a great week!
Smooth Running
