Eight brilliant GoodGym-ers joined me in sunny and muggy Brent to help Abbey Community Centre.
As everyone attending were regulars we dispensed with a formal intro and had a chat about the task and what everyone had been up to in the two weeks since I had been at the helm. The main focus was the upcoming GoodGym Olympics on 30th June and what we could do about getting more missions in Brent!
GG Olympics
It was a 3.4km run down to Abbey CC and the weather was sunny but still very warm, it made for a hard run but we all kept up a good pace and arrived in around 20 minutes. When there we had some water to cool off and then were given our instructions for delivering flyers.
The flyers were for the local community cafe that is held every Saturday at the centre, the more people that know about this the more will know about the many and varied events that are held there. We have delievered leaflets for Abbey before and they always tell us that these deliveries make a big difference to their turnout. This time we were delivering leaflets to the Mary Green estate, a new area for us. We walked the short distance to the estate and then split off to deliver the leaflets.
Too many closed doors
I walked round the estate checking on the pairs and the resounding issue was that we couldn't get in to the building so were only able to deliver to the few doors that were on the outside of the buildings. We re-grouped and were going to head to another area that had been marked for us when we chanced upon some people leaving the main tower block. they said we could speak to a security guard who ok'd us to deliver in the block.
Tower Run
We took the lift to the top floor split in to an 'odd' and 'even team and then raced down. Apart from the odd bit of team switching it all worked well and we were able to deliver flyers to all floors!
With that done it was time to head back to the Queensbury. Karen and Clare suggested a different route home which we tried... definitely shorter (2.9km) but we weren't sure about the hills! Funnily enough the route took us right by Karen's road...
It was even muggier on the run home but again we kept up a good steady pace. Great job everyone.
Next week we have a great task - we're helping to unload plants from a Chelsea Flower Show garden that are going to be re-used for a Dementia Garden. It's a great idea and a number of local groups are coming together to make it happen so let's show them what we've got an get as many people down as possible. Sign up here.
