Report written by Conroy
Last night 7 members of Good Gym Croydon ran 1/2 mile to West Croydon, to help Unique Roots prepare the raised at Harris Academy for the new school year.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, however judging by what greeted us yesterday looking at the pictures does not give you the full picture of what we saw. Looking at the raised beds you wouldn't have believed that a group of us had visited the site earlier this year to help clear some of the raised beds. Had it not been for the ground sheets that had been laid over two of the beds that had been worked on. That said we did not let what we saw deterred us, after surveying the task at hand we set about working on weeding the beds.
To fork or hoe
There was some tall over grown weeds with deep roots that were unable to be pulled up with our hands where we had to fork or hoe them out.
At 19:45 we had almost cleared one of the raised beds, we looked at what we had done and felt very proud of our work so far. We were motivated to see how much more we could get done before our time was up. Spurred on by the task at hand and finding a tool of choice "a hoe" Dovile was eagerly bashing away through the bushes with me in toe with the fork digging up the roots of the weeds she was unable to root out.
By the time our time was up we managed to clear 4 of the raised beds which should give Unique Roots and the children of Harris Academy something to start with until our next visit on the 21 September. Its the day after the lovely Pam's birthday so we will be celebrating with her come and join in the celebrations.
