Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Charlotte Emms
A lovely bunch of us met on Saturday afternoon to help the Friends of Ruskin Park, a volunteer-run charity who help to maintain and preserve the park.
Our task was to remove loads of overgrown weeds from a couple of beds so that a more curated approach of a bed of wildflowers could be planted in their place. We had planned to do this the week before but due to incredibly wet weather it had to be postponed due to the ground being so waterlogged.
We had a team of two manning the wheelbarrows to take away the uprooted weeds to the composting area with the rest of us pulling up as much as we could and digging our forks into the ground when the roots ran a bit deeper. We were pretty lucky the ground hadn't dried up too much after the wet weather as it made it so much easier to move the soil underneath. After we'd got up most of the unwanted plants, we started turning the soil over and loosening it ready for the new wildflowers to go in.
After an hour and a half of hefty garden work it was time to down tools and get a quick group photo before heading our separate ways for the afternoon. We can't wait to see what the finished wildflower beds will look like!
