Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Greenwich runner
Straight from the local parkrun, 2 GoodGymers descended (and then ascended) into the Oasis Community Garden, ready to join the regular volunteers for their Saturday morning tasks. This small but mighty pocket of greenery sits between a busy road and the local buildings, and is enjoyed by both locals and wildlife.
The main task for today was mulching as much as possible the area around the plants, but when we arrived, the local volunteers were already in full swing with shoveling, transporting and spreading the mulch. So we were assigned the task of bulb planting in preparation for a flowery garden next year. As a side task, we also got to do some weeding and general tidying up.
The skies were looking menacing and, with the threat of thunderstorms looming over us, we managed to plant a lot of the bulbs before the rain finally came down. This was thankfully short-lived, and after an hour's work all the bulbs were neatly underground, the mulch fully spread and the weeds pile looking bigger than at the start.
We'll only see the fruits (or flowers) of our labour next year when the bulbs blossom - we'll hopefully be back before then to help out again at this lovely garden!
