Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Tessa Hall
I arrived to find Southwyck Community Centre buzzing with activity: the Healthy Living Platform team were doing an amazing job of preparing food for local families for the festive period. Two people were mashing and roasting veg in the kitchen, one person was counting cabbages and kale, one person was checking all the delivery details on a mega spreadsheet and another was handing over huge bags of food staples to a couple of volunteers with cars to deliver. I showed up to represent Goodgym and at first felt a bit redundant. My growing baby bump meant I couldn’t heft the heavy bags of food for delivery and everything else seemed to be under control... until we realised there were lots of lovely toy gifts that hadn’t yet been added to the food delivery parcels. We realised a few of them were supposed to have gone with parcels that had already been taken away for distribution so that left me with a nice light armful of toys to deliver. I walked about 4km to local addresses to drop these off to grateful local families and felt like a proper Christmas elf. Very rewarding, especially as it was my 100th good deed!
At the Healthy Living Platform we’re a social enterprise which is all about offering activities which benefit the health and wellbeing of the whole community. We develop community programmes and activities that empower local people and are self-sustaining. We encourage healthy and sustainable lifestyles by giving practical training, education, information and support on topics such as nutrition, cooking, food growing, health and wellbeing.
