Report written by Benjamin Annear
5 GoodGym runners took part in the official opening events at Cardiff Metropolitan Universities' brand new athletics track at Cyncoed Campus.
The brand new outdoor Athletics track consists of an International standard 8 lane mondo track, throws cage and 4 sand pits. The track is fully equipped for athletics events which are held on an annual basis. The infield is marked for a range of outdoor sports including football and lacrosse.
Before our race Colin Jackson and Jamie Baulch saw us GoodGym runners grouped together and asked us all for photos. We accepted but held back from signing autographs as there just wasn't the time with a warm up to do and the pre-race team talk... Nb. Events may have occurred slightly differently and it may have been us asking them...
After taking a number of photos doing various poses we had to reestablish our focus... We had to do what we came to do... and that was the 1 mile sprint!
It was heat 3 and this meant it was time for Lucy, Tom and Mikey to head to the starting line. BANG! The gun sounded and all runners set off at a remarkable rate of knots. Tom quickly found his stride although found the last lap of the track most challenging. Lucy and Mikey both maintained a good pace throughout. Lucy ran the Cardiff 10k the day before as well... wow!
Next was heat 4 and it was Paul and Ben's turn. BANG! The gun sounded again and runners were on there way. Paul tried to maintain a 5 minute mile pace however his legs couldn't do it (which is to no ones surprise as he ran a 20 mile trail run on Saturday and the Cardiff 10k on Sunday!). Ben tried to maintain a pace which he felt was the limit he could run at and also kept close to the runner in front of him - he also ran the 10k the day before.
All in all we had a great evening! A big thanks to James Thie who hosted the night's events did an incredible job of it. He makes GoodGym feel welcome at all the events he commentates at... I'm sure we will be seeing a lot more of James and he will be seeing a lot more of us in the future.

A congratulations is also in order to Steve Morris who manage to knock 10 seconds off the British T20 mile best! He managed to run the mile in 4:23:07. WOW!
