Report written by Tabitha Skinner
When we arrived Joana (a local Energy garden volunteer who had thought she was coming for watering) was already on her tenth bucket load of compost, and Energy Garden's Aga and Kyle had separated soil into bags ready for us to drag down.
Due to the recent rain, the plans for watering were put on hold and it was all hands on deck for the mammoth task of shifting the compost. We were provided with High Vis Jackets and set to it. We filled buckets, bags, sacks, wheel barrows, even water butts- you name it, if it was there we filled it with compost and carried it to the platforms. We carefully left space around the corn, tomatoes, other plants and flowers to grow and covered the weeds and soil in compost.
We soon got into the rhythm of it, filling bags, carrying soil, emptying bags and repeating the process. The compost gently warmed our backs as we slung the sacks over our shoulders- the result of the anaerobic composting process . (I for one, was glad to hear this as the smell did have me wondering if it the compost was fresh from an animal ).
After over an hour of non-stop work we had managed to finish three of the four bags. Why is Brondesbury Park station not more accessible? If only they had considered this then we could use the lift...there must be a petition somewhere..... So with one bag left, and our allocated time up, most the team had to head home.
But Samina, Joana and I couldn't say no to a challenge, and accepted water and M&Ms as bribes to stay till the last sack of compost was done....Oh and of course the four pallets they had arrived on had to be carried down the stairs and across the platforms too. What a great job
The Energy Garden team were thrilled with the work from Goodgym, as were plenty of passer-bys and station users who thanked us all heartily. For any other Goodgymers reading this....don’t worry we have done the hard work- you can sign up any Monday or Thursday for some gentle watering to keep the garden alive and healthy
