Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Ellen
Aimee and I met up and ran across town to help out Ms R, who needed an area in her garden cleared so she could sit outside. But it wasn't just any spot - she wanted a spot that got a lot of sun! And who could blame her? But when we got there we realised how big a task it was. Not only were there bramble canes as thick as a wrist, but there were old dead canes all over the ground from when someone has previously come to cut the brambles back! But we were undaunted, and got stuck in. We cleared up all the old canes from one particular spot where Ms R said got the most sunshine. It was also the flatest area, with a bit of paving so she could walk to it safely (as she was a bit unsteady on her feet). The I got out her new electric strimmer to cut back the growing canes, with Aimee bagging them up. We tidied up around her back door too, so she wouldn't trip on the odds and ends lying around. We found some interesting things under all that green growth, such as old ceramic brewing jugs, and the iron pedestal for an old fashioned sewing machine! There was no way we'd be able to tackle much more as there was just so much of it (and we'd run out of green waste bags too). But we left her with a small patch of patio, where she could sit and enjoy the fresh air - her own place in the sun 🌞
