Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Madhan
Wiping, folding, sweeping, mopping and wrapping was the usual on Friday evenings. When the clock hits 3pm, eveyone moved around and assigned a task to themselves as most of them are regulars. I knew the drill as this was my 4th time in the last 5 weeks.
That's after 3pm. But I reached the St.John's church 5 minutes earlier. For a change, Kash was in the kitchen duty, cleaning the plates. After clicking a picture I went back to my routine of folding tables and arranging them.
We are doing at a very good pace, that by 3:40 were are done with most. Only kitchen work remained. Dhar, got some strawberry icecream for everyone and we took a short break and enjoying that before it starts melting.
Maria, a regular volunteer with soup kitchen, had a side quest on her own. The fridge freezer could not be closed as the doors and shelves inside were frozen and the ice needs clearing. She was using multiple techniques, like scrapping, hammering, hot water wipe, etc to get the ice melted. After battling for 20 minutes, the ice age was over.
Soon kitchen group wrapped up their cleaning and tidying. I gave a nice mop and just when everyone was about to leave for the day, a twist happened. One of the volunteers, lost their key, we took apart the whole kitchen to find that. But after 20+ minutes I started to make a move as there were too many hands.
When leaving there were 3 milk bottles left which had use by date as today. I took one and listed on Olio and it was collected within an hour.
Ealing Soup Kitchen is a registered charity set up to help the vulnerable and homeless in the area. Nine local churches support our faith-based Soup Kitchen, which has been running since 1973.
