Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Lucy Hill
I met up with David ‘on a mission to do 500 missions’ Drury on a gloriously sunny afternoon in Westminster to help out at Ms J’s house.
Ms J was currently in hospital, and her mobility had significantly deteriorated, and she needed a hospital bed, hoist and all the other equipment that came with it at home. She lives in a five storey town house, and needed space to be made for all this. In order to get this space, two GoodGymmers were needed to move the furniture around.
This is where David and I stepped in, quite literally, up two flights of stairs, to meet P (Ms J’s nephew). He showed us what needed doing: - A chair needed to be taken upstairs to another room - A large dresser needed to be moved into the dining room next door - And a heavy old fashioned desk needed to be shifted along from one window to the next.
Challenge accepted!
Firstly, we completed the chair up the stair task. Not as easy as initially anticipated, but we managed without David banging his head on the low ceiling and passed the chair up the narrow twisty stairway without knocking anything off the walls. Success.
There was now space for part 2. P had been taking out the drawers of the large dresser, which made it easier for David and I to move. Luckily, we discovered the dresser had a set of wheels. They hadn’t been oiled or moved in about 40 years, but they did make the slide across the room into next door a little easier. We lined it up, and then helped to refit the drawers.
Final part was the desk, which unfortunately was not on wheels, so with a bit of brute force, the three of us pushed it along from one window to the next. We almost trapped David in the corner, but he managed to escape (nothing can stop his from doing good eh).
It hardly took 15 minutes, but the job was done, and there was plenty of space for Ms J’s new bed and equipment. P gave us a big thanks, and we left back with a March in our step, down the steps back into the March sunshine.
