This was my first visit to City Harvest this month. So I can say, it's been a while. The weather was humid and we are not the only ones who felt sweaty. The bananas that were in the boxes were sweating a lot. After filling a few crates with sweaty bananas, my gloves become wet and started sticking to my palms. So I switched to a latex glove.
Jordan, whom I have partnered with a couple of times now, and I became a team again and slowly filled the crates with bananas. The bananas came from different vendors. Some were packed in plastic bags. Some are individual pieces and some are in bunches. They came in all sizes as well from small to medium to large.
After filling 30 crates of bananas, Mizan, the warehouse manager asked us to repeat the same. So we filled 30 more crates. There were some spoiled ones in the mix as they couldn't withstand the heat today.
For the 3rd batch of 30 crates, 2 more volunteers joined us. So the 4 of us were steadily filling the crates with bananas. Around 7:40 pm, Ruby, another warehouse manager said, we are done for the day when we complete the pallet. We had 7/8 crates to fill. We finished in 10 minutes and had some smoothies and milkshakes before leaving the City Harvest.
City Harvest helps put surplus food to good use in a sustainable way, by distributing to organisations that feed the hungry.
