OK, a terrible title. But Thursday evening saw us back at one of our favourite Bethnal Green tasks, Hollybush Gardens, to help Michael and Margaret with some long overdue gardening jobs.

The clouds looked ominous as we set off from Keddlestone Walk community centre and they didn't hold back. Glad we brought waterproofs, a hardy bunch of tower hamlets GG faithfuls and one intrepid explorer all the way from Newham (thank you so much for coming all that way in the rain, it was great to have you!) set about clearing dead plants and weeds from the planters (checking in every few minutes with Michael and Margaret to the tune of 'is this one also a weed?') and rescuing the poppy heads. We also unearthed (quite literally) quite a large number of potatoes which had likely grown up from discarded potato eyes - impressive!

There were lots more tasks to be done but to save us getting too cold and wet, these are now stored up for a future session, and all that remained was to take a picture of our wet but happy selves. Thank you all for making this such a fun session!

Hollybush Estate
Hollybush's ‘Rocky’ Gardens and ‘Strawberry Fields’ orchard are now an established nature reserve with 79 growing spaces

The Hollybush and Teesdale Estate Urban Growers project began in April 2009 in Rocky Park – a disused children’s play area. Now enjoyed by the whole community, the area includes seats and communal herb beds for all to use.
