Report written by Anita (she/her)
With pubs and restaurants reopening last Saturday, Food redistributor charity City Harvest just got a whole lot busier. The evening shift flew by with pallet after pallet of surplus food arriving ready for us all to sort the contents and decant it into crates ready for redistribution. The only downside of the shift was the disposal of vast quantities of stale bread. Everyone felt a bit down over the waste. The stale bread is no longer being collected for pig food so it now goes out with other food waste to be processed into biogas and fertiliser. Fitting two dozen black crates of surplus bread into 5 orange food waste bins was an interesting challenge. Two mouldy pineapples were the final artistic/comic flourish to my bread mountain.
I also did a little bit of work on the new garden area outside Unit 22. Some of the pot plants were looking a bit sad so I potted them up and cleared a bit of ground (rubble?) to create a new area of flowerbed.
City Harvest helps put surplus food to good use in a sustainable way, by distributing to organisations that feed the hungry.
