Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
37 runners ran to shift 2 tonnes of rubble, dig a new path and clear 2 acres of weeds.
It was the first ever run of GoodGym Lambeth last night. We'd had a record number of signups and were a bit worried that we were going to have too many people for the number of tools. Our task was to help Loughborough Junction Action Group get a 2 acre plot of land and fill in the gaps so that their ready ready for their extensive growing plans.
We assembled at City Pantry in Market Row in the middle of Brixton. By 6.45 we'd already had a big crowd assembling in the market. Lots of new face and a lots of GoodGymers from other parts of London.
We headed out as a pack to run the warmup 1k to Loughborough Junction. On arrival we were met by Anthea who made sure we weren't going to eat the poisonous weeds and briefed us on the rest of our work for the night. The task was pretty big, there was a 10 metre path to cut into some rocky ground, a huge pile of rubble to shift and about 2 acres of weeds to clear.
gloves donned
Spades were grabbed, gloves donned and wheelbarrows filled as we set about trying to get the whole lot done in 30mins. Everyone worked hard - the weeding team moved on to clearing rubble from the undergrowth and and rubble team used everything they could get their hands to to get as much shifted as possible. The dedicated path digging crew stuck at it until they'd leveled a 10 metre strip of land and removed load more rocks and bricks from it. Creating what might be described as the "most beautiful path Loughborough Junction Action Group has ever asked for."
Rapid 5k
Team Tom S and Tom H running guru and founder member respectively led a rapid 5k back to base averaging 5 min kilometres round the outside of Brockwell park. Impressive for a first run. Seems like GoodGym Lambeth is going to be a fast one.
looking rosy
Mark Herbert led a 3k run through the Harris estate and Wyck Gardens with another big group. They arrived back at 8.15 looking rosy - and stretched out weary backs and legs.
Founder member Jane Austin and the marathon-recovery / injury gang hot-footed it back to Market Row to make sure everything was ready for the others to get back in.
so much more
All in all a lovely run with a great new gang of people. We're looking forward to next week. Register here, come along and bring your friends so we can get even more done.
