Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Leicester runner
Against the odds of being short on transport, the 6 amigos made it to the Coalville hospital to give the staff and patients garden some much needed tlc.
On arrival we were greeted by Linda Mellor who explained the task we were about to start.
The gardens had become unkempt and over grown to the point where the summer house was out of sight and unused.
The grounds , with the help of Goodgym , could be transformed and used as a real tonic for patients and a peaceful rest area for staff.
With garden tools in hand we started the weeding, trimming, digging and removing of the the overgrown weeds and shrubs.
Our leader Dave had been given the job of removing some of the metal seating posts and brackets, a job that proved a lot harder than it looked.
3 hours later and with the help of Jimmy, with the Crowbar, Daves spade and Lee
s comedy hammer one of the posts was freed.
Rachel decided to transform a rose garden and set to work to give everything in sight a short back and sides.
Lee, armed with garden shears made light work of cutting back some of the shrubs that had gone wild over the years.
Stu showed he had hidden topiary talents by neatly trimming the shrubs into rounded and mushroom shaped
delights.
I managed to dismantle an ivy clad panel and with Jims help we made sure the summer house was visible.
Wheelbarrow load after load we walked the demolished jungle to the skip a sight to behold as it was quite a walk.
Linda provided us with some welcome refreshments.
With everything tidy we left our task feeling pretty satisfied with our mornings achievements.
The size of the task means we will have to return maybe a couple more times but we
ve made a good start in restoring the gardens to their former glory.
LPT NHS has a number of sites where small jobs are not covered by any maintenance contract.
