Report written by York runner
A group of us GG Yorkies assembled bright and early at the Bishy Road car park. Our mission today was to marshal the 5km RU Taking the P? race which is a men only race raising funds for prostate cancer research.
Whilst we were waiting we were asked if we could blow up some balloons and being the ever-helpful folks that we are, we were keen to offer our services. However, it soon became apparent that we couldn't hold the balloons we'd blown up, tie string around them and blow up the next ones without extra hands, so myself and Tristan became the "holders" and soon gathered quite an impressive collection of balloons from the GG team and everyone else it seemed! Keen not to lose all the balloons in the breeze or recreate a scene from the film "Up" we managed to pass on the balloons to the York Against Cancer team so that we could go and take up our marshalling positions.
Myself, Becky and Vicky were on duty at Tower Gardens, around the 1km mark, so we didn't have far to walk. We fuelled up with the biggest Danish pastries you've ever seen en route as it took a lot of energy shouting to all the runners to "mind the post" as they had to negotiate a tight left turn into Tower Gardens. We managed to avoid any collisions but decided to let the Elizabethan band (who randomly appeared at the end of the race) go through the slightly larger gate to avoid the post.
We took a slow walk back to the finish and then our only task was to help reunite Nick with his phone which Tristan was looking after for him. Considering Tristan had lost his own phone yesterday maybe this wasn't the best idea! We soon tracked Tristan down and he'd managed not to lose Nick's phone so all was good.
