Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by York runner
20 fantastic GG Yorkies came to do good at the community garden on the site of Better York.
Sandwiched between York High School and Energise is a great little community garden which is used by several groups including the York Autism Hub. Many of the areas had become quite overgrown with some dangerous overhanging brambles and loads of weeds and nettles. The pathway through the space is also going be used as the run route on an upcoming family triathlon, so it needed widening and all the encroaching branches cut back.
We'd managed to recruit a bonus runner on the way to the task; Ste had just come back from a very quick run and was totally out of breath, we asked if he wanted to come along to GoodGym and he couldn't speak to say no so just joined us. We also had new runner, Sophie, along with us for the first time - give 'em both a big Yorkshire cheer.
Chris - the Community Sport Manager - was super-organised and had prepped all the tools ready for us, as well as laying out an amazing circuit for our post-task bootcamp sesh. One team grabbed loppers and started slashing back overgrown brambles, another team started digging over the vegetable planters and the rest headed to the far end to start cutting back the footpath and scrubbing off grime from the benches. Check out the before and after pictures to see how good it all looked!
We made a gargantuan pile of debris and cuttings, then Amanda and Michal pegged it over to finish scrubbing the last couple of benches. A good job done.
Bootcamp!!!
We completed a massive circuit including:
Everyone did an outstanding job and we finished with an agility ladder bunny hop-off where 'Fast Feet Griff' and 'Mighty Springing Mitch' led the field.
Join us on Monday for a 6km run to finish the footpath at Heworth Holme - sign up here.
