Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by York runner
Mr D had a large honeysuckle bush (that's what he thought it was anyway) that had got out of hand and was growing across his front doorway and blocking light from some of his windows. I started by trimming it with some shears and loppers, trying to leave a bit of an archway across the front door as requested by Mr D. He came outside to see what we were doing and had a bit of a chat, telling us about his days at music festivals and his camper van that he used to have, all the time being watched by his lovely black cat. One of the neighbours came across to have a chat with Mr D and kindly offered to lend us her stepladders to reach the upper parts of the bush, so we took turns in trimming the higher bits to try and get it below roof level. Ange made a great job of trimming the buddlehia bush (at least that's what we think it was) which was growing across one of the windows and then it was just a case of getting all the cuttings into the green bin (which we soon filled) and black bags and did some sweeping up. Mr D was really pleased with what we'd done and from his chat with his neighbour it sounded as though it may encourage him to maintain the garden more himself. I cycled and Ange ran to a local parkrun route and did a lap before parting ways - Ange still had to run home (but she is marathon training)!
