Today two GoodGymmers helped out at Growing Works’ Harvest Celebration. GoodGym Huddersfield regularly help at Growing Works. We’ve made paths, prepared raised beds and, one of my favourite tasks, made willow stars and fish. Regular GoodGymmer Ben got to the Growing Works allotment site, hidden behind some houses off Wakefield Road, nice and early, and helped with setting up the event. I needed my weekly parkrun fix and arrived a little later, just in time to be asked by Rachel, from Growing Works, to put up a bell tent. I must admit I had a little panic on the inside as I’d never erected a bell tent before, but in the usual GoodGym spirit I got on with it with help from Lewis and Ben. It wasn’t as difficult as I thought it might be and the tent stayed up for the duration of the event! It’s always good to learn a new skill. Anyone who has run with GoodGym Huddersfield knows that Ben likes a cup of tea and regularly manages to acquire one during tasks. Today was no exception! After a brew Ben helped make bread on the fire and I learnt my second new skill of the day; Nordic Braiding. Google it, I had to, and have a go. It looks like a friendship bracelet but is way quicker to make! Ben and I then tucked into some delicious curry and bread, washed down of course with more tea! Lots of families from the local area came to enjoy the fresh air, activities and food at today’s Harvest Celebration. It was great to catch up with old friends and make some new ones. As the event drew to a close it was time to pack everything away and take the bell tent down again. And anyone who has ever camped knows that a tent never goes back in it’s bag as easily as it came out, but on this occasion Ben and I managed it on the second attempt! Thanks to Growing Works for organising a great event and we hope to be able to help you out again soon.
