Report written by Rachel White
Our longer Group Run this evening took us to New Malden for another visit to Jubilee Square. Yuwing, New Malden's answer to Monty Don, has big plans for the planters and wants to transform one into an Asian vegetable plot. He listed off the plants (and there were so many we've probably not listed them all here) but it included Pak-Choi, lettuce, kale (but a different variety to the one we buy in supermarkets which he assured us was much better), garlic, chives, spring onions... the list goes on. Sounded utterly delicious! We were in.
To make his dreams come true, we needed to empty out a planter to make room. Yuwing took control of removing the existing plants and carefully loaded them up in the wheelbarrow. We took it in turns to take out individual plants and place them in the spaces between the current plants. Our very own Monty Tom advised us to put the larger items in the middle and the smaller grasses round the edge to create height and interest. Following his measured advice, we carefully dug holes and planted the greenery in what we hoped was a creative and attractive way. We'll find out when everything starts blooming in the spring.
Our dedicated team of helpers finished the task in less time than expected to the delight of Yuwing. We tidied up and swept down the seats removing loose soil and woodchip so they were clean enough to sit on - we gave them a try out just to be sure. Great task - we'll be back to help soon.
We provide a activities and events to the local community, such as crafts, performances, exercise and support for local businesses close by.
