Report written by John Hayes
Uncertain times call for unusual Community Missions. Usually, we are very much an on foot or two wheels group of people, but needs must right now. Naneesh and Tousif were two of our group who answered the call and signed up to get involved with the food partnership that TAWS are organising with Birmingham City Council and various agencies around the city.
Today they got their first delivery shift completed. Starting off at the new base in Ladywood, which has only been in operation for a couple of days, they found it was a little chaotic as new procedures were bedding in and many agencies involved in getting food to the most vulnerable at this difficult time, were lining up (at a safe distance) to collect much needed food to pass on. You can see the scale of this much needed operation in the pictures.
So you can see as well, this was not a cardio task as such, as there were cars involved, but there was a lot of strength work going on. Tousif did 8 drops, stretching from Bordesley Green to Nechells, to the City Centre and then back to less than a mile away from his first delivery! What a route, let's hope he didn't start Strava. Naneesh had 14 bags to drop at 11 locations. She was meant to go for a run after, but found it was surprisingly tiring work! I guess it'll have to be leg day tomorrow.
If you want to help with the efforts to get food to people around Birmingham, email me at johnhayes@goodgym.org and I can share details. There is a mammoth task being done by a swiftly collected group of fantastic volunteers, and it's brilliant that GoodGym are part of it too.
