On a hot April Saturday, two GoodGymmers braved the sun to help Simon (the task owner) beautify the kitchen garden and also celebrate his birthday!

Tilly and Lucie arrived and were soon greeted by Simon and some of the local volunteers, and were told that today’s task was to beautify the pergola by adding some sticks to create a trellis - which will be used for honeysuckle and roses.

After searching through the sizeable pile of sticks (some of which had been smoothed and spruced by Southwark GoodGymmers in a previous mission!) and using the secateurs to smooth out the rough bits, the next job was to drill holes and add nails. Then came the fun part - trying not to hammer our own thumbs! (A job made considerably harder by the addition of some prosecco…)

After a quick break for cake and birthday prosecco, Tilly and Simon finished the job, and Thorlands Kitchen Garden is ready for some beautiful trailing plants! A successful task, and even more successful birthday!

Thorlands Garden
The first Camberwell market garden in over fifty years

Thorlands Gardens is a food growing club based on an east Lambeth housing estate, in Camberwell. There was a shared vision to move forward with a zero miles food project on unused and unloved brownfield spaces. There was an understanding that residents of all ages could volunteer simply for the value that experience gives to individual wellbeing. There is also the added bonus of sharing the fruits of the labour, which in this case is healthy produce, such as vegetables, salads, herbs, and edible flowers.
