Report written by Rachel (she/her)
2 Goodgymmers joined regular volunteers at Broomhill Library for a "Garden Blitz" as part of Great Big Green Week.
We learnt about the history of the heritage garden, which was designed by Percy Cane in the 1800s when the building was still a privately owned house.
Since the building became a library in 1957, it's gone through many changes and fallen somewhat into disrepair. The volunteer group have already done lots of work to make it a more usable space and they are working to secure funding for further improvements.
In 2019 the wall at the back collapsed and had since been repaired, but much of the ground and paths that had previously been uncovered by an archaeological dig were left covered in rubble.
Our main job was loading this into trugs and transferring into a skip for removal.
By the end of the session, the skip was full and fresh areas of path had been uncovered.
It's great to see the pictures of the original design and how much potential the garden has. Hopefully they secure funding to breathe new life into it.
If you'd like to join the group, they meet every Wednesday 11-1 and would always welcome the help! They also have more activities this week including building a bug hotel on Friday, a litter pick on Saturday and a plant sale all week: https://www.broomhill-library.org.uk/whats-on
