Clothes sorting and pizza eating

Sheffield Report written by Tom Mutton

This has got to be the first, but hopefully not the last GG task where we have had pizza cooked for us on arrival!

The legend that is Jess Dawson, mastermind behind Common Thread despite having very little sleep after a missed flight connection was still flying in top form giving us the low down on clothes sorting in preparation for the next Common Thread event.

Common Thread clothes exchanges happen regularly and encourage people to avoid the fast fashion and instead swap their clothes with others to better serve each others wardrobes and wares. A fantastic idea, which should be done in more places.

There was plenty to sort, from shoes, to accessories and clothes for all occasions, shapes, sizes and colors!

We got through a lot of bags in our time at Union St which is the venue that hosts Common Thread.

We'll be back again for more next month.

Until next time, happy running! :)

No time to lean, it’s time to clean

Sheffield Report written by Sheffield runner

We met a couple of wonderful Sustrans volunteers who work tirelessly to keep the national network accessible and pleasant for walking, wheeling and cycling. They brought us the tools and the plan.

We were working on a particularly grotty underpass which is part of the 627 route. It is a short section that goes under the Parkway and links Broad Street near Park Square to Victoria Quays. It was such a mess.

Quite a few walkers, runners and cyclists were using it despite the litter and vegetation lining the route. And evidently people use the area for parking in the day.

We got to work sweeping, litter picking and cutting back some vegetation to make it clear. Very satisfying! We could really see the difference.

A journalist from ITV met us to cover the story for the telly. See the story on ITV on 26th February at 6pm. or catch it on ITV catchup for 24 hours after that.

Back to the Showroom for drinks and snacks.

Thanks everyone for coming and for Sustrans who made this happen and joined us on a relatively chilly Monday night.

Gettting Pumped Up at Sheffield Community Bike Project!

Sheffield Report written by Tom Mutton

This week took us to a new project to @GGSHF to help the folks at Sheffield Community Bike Project (SCBP).

We also welcomed a new runner this week. Give a cheer and follow for Matthew!

It was also great to see Lucy back for her second run with us!

SCBP has been in Sheffield for a little while now, but until recently only had temporary spaces. Now they have their own space on King Street and it is taking shape!

As with all community/volunteer based projects there is always some work to do and that's what we were there for.

On the cards for the evening was:

  • Move tool boards from one wall to another
  • Move inner tube hanger from one wall to another
  • Re-arrange ceiling tiles that had come loose
  • Put new notice board outside
  • Add tools to the tool boards

It was fantastic to be able to help the project and find out about more of what SCBP to. Hopefully we will be back again soon to help with other projects they need a hand with and some of our runner may head to a session to fix their bike or volunteer to help.

Until next time, happy running :)

Parkwood-chipping

Sheffield Report written by Rachel (she/her)

It was bitterly cold this afternoon at Parkwood Springs, but dry at least. 3 Goodgymmers braved the cold on our bikes along with lots of local families to help plant a new hedgerow. We got the lowdown from Treemendous Tim of Kids Plant Trees - most of the planting had been done in the morning session, so we left the remaining planting to the children and turned to a very familiar task - woodchipping! We trundle back and forth with barrows and trugs until all the planted whips had a good layer of nutritious mulch, getting a good strength workout in the meantime and just about keeping warm!
