Putting our best chocolate Spoon Forward for Roundabout

Sheffield Report written by Sheffield runner

Six goodgymers met, and we were quickly organised into a number of streets near the Botanical Gardens.

We were delivering leaflets to advertise the Yorkshire Chocolate Festivsl (Saturday 19th October 10am-4pm).

Every penny raised will go to Roundabout, South Yorkshire’s youth homeless charity, which makes a valuable difference to the lives of some of the region’s most vulnerable young people.

More details and tickets are available at: https://www.yorkshirechocolatefestival.com/

We finished almost in daylight but the autumnal evenings are slowly starting.

After a lovely evening of deliveries, Annie invited us to her place for tea and snacks. Thanks Annie!

Picking 🍎 under the Mistletoe

Sheffield Report written by Rachel (she/her)

Celine and I joined members of the Abundance project to help harvest 4 apple trees from a public orchard near the Millennium gallery so that they can be distributed to good causes and saved from waste.

Great turnout of volunteers despite the earlier downpour. There were lots of ripe, tasty and unblemished fruit still in the trees, so we could afford to be a bit picky about leaving the more damaged ones and we still had a bountiful harvest!

The abundance of mistletoe in every tree confounded me as I've never seen it so prolific and up close. I've since been told that it will have been put there deliberately so it can be harvested for Christmas events and is known to thrive particularly well in Apple trees. Couldn't resist the photo op 😘

Getting the Cycle Network Back in Shape!

Sheffield Report written by Kim Longbon

Five GoodGymers left the Showroom on another glorious Monday night with half an idea of where we were going! After finding Sustrans Simon and the other Sustrans volunteers, we found Curly Cat too. Armed with litter pickers, shovels, snippers and brooms we spent 45 minutes clearing up an overgrown section of the cycle network. We snipped picked, brushed and scraped at the vegetation that was narrowing the path and cleared up around the benches and stairs to make the area more appealing for both foot and bike passengers.

As ever, there were some excellent finds including a duvet! We dragged out a load of Himalayan Balsam and stinging nettles. We also saw a beautiful flock of geese land themselves in the river.

By the time we left, this area of the cycle network which it very widely used was much more inviting for the public and as we were working, lots of the users thanked us which is always lovely to hear!

Another great job for the GoodGymers.

Looks like the evenings are drawing in us again and so from next week, it is probably time to dig out those head torches!

Living life on the Edge(s)

Sheffield Report written by Rachel (she/her)

Celine and I set out on an adventure meeting at the Western edge of Sheffield and embarked on a 10 mile trail run along Stanage Edge, Burbage Edge and Totley Moor ending at Mrs C's house. We had spectacular views of the beautiful heather.

On arrival at Mrs C's we were warmly welcomed with tea and biscuits as we stretched off from our run. Then it turned out we were greeted with yet another edge! Mrs C was keen for us to pay some attention to her lawn, particularly the edges.

I gave it all a going over with the mower, whilst Celine neatened the edges with shears. After doing this, we did a bit of weeding all whilst chatting with Mrs C about her lovely garden, including original WW2 Anderson shelter (now converted to shed)!
