Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Patrick Luong
On a sunny Sunday, Patrick joined the Blooming Marvellous crew at Penn Road Gardens to sweep up the river of golden leaves
Patrick woke up on Bank Holiday 🌞 day and thought it was glorious weather to be out in the garden and happened to see the listing for the monthly gardening drop-in sessions at Penn Road Gardens.
On arrival, Patrick was warmly welcomed and given a very familiar task of helping to gather the many fallen leaves around the award-winning gardens. Apparently, Penn Road Gardens were the trailblazers and first to set up a community group to look after the green oasis rather than wait for the resource-strapped local authority. And the hard work shows with many awards.
There was a lot of sweeping, litter picking and collecting to deposit in the compost making bins. And there was a very special guest gardener all the way from Delhi who is in London visiting his daughter, saw the sign outside the garden and thought he'd get stuck in and even said he'd come back for the last Sunday in September. What a hero!
The veterans were doing a wider range of gardening, clearing, trimming and cutting, then after about 90 minutes it was time for tea and chatter about the origins of Penn Road Gardens, GoodGym and Patrick!
Great day and please do put the last Sunday of the month in your calendars and hope it's not the last sunny Sunday of the year!
We were the first community group to get a contract from Islington Council to maintain the garden at the end of our street, and have made it useable for the residents and a beautiful space for the community to enjoy
