Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Sam Lefevre (he/him)
Six GoodGymers came out in the scorching heat to assist Simon at Thorlands with more mulching in the "Forest" garden.
However, it all started at 18:30 when Sam opened up Old Spike Roastery to let in Louise who was flat hunting earlier as she will be moving down to London from York in August! Everyone else had sent a message that they would meet us at the task and opted out of the group run, yet Sam waited until 18:45 just to be sure.
Since it was just the two, Sam skipped the GoodGym speech and ice-breaker question, but still did a warm-up as that is crucial before a run.
Sweltering heat & summer beats
Our (just under) 3k run to Thorlands got us all hot and bothered as we had to gradually run up Grove Hill to arrive at Thorlands on the other side.
At Thorlands, Frances was already waiting in the "Walled" garden whilst Alex and Olive helped Simon bring over the watering hose. We waited around for a few minutes for Rebecca to arrive before we gathered the tools and the wheelbarrow to transport it over to the "Forest" garden.
We continued with where we left off on Saturday. Sam had brought over some cardboard the night before and so he gave Rebecca the task to clean each cardboard (taking off any sticky tape). Alex and Frances opted to clear more ground and prepare it for cardboard and leaf mulch whilst Louise and Olive shoveled barrel loads of leaf mulch to first put on where it still needed leaf mulch before moving onto the new areas.
The 40 minutes flashed by in the furnace of Thorlands Community garden (actually, it wasn't that bad). We gathered the tools to head back to the "Walled" garden and took our customary group photo before we departed our own ways.
Alex joined Louise and Sam for the initial 400 metres before splitting as the duo went towards Denmark Hill station and Alex opted to go towards the main high street in Camberwell. The run back was slightly harder, but cooler, but we made it back in one piece with Sam pushing Louise for a faster than normal group run pace.
Thank You to all the GG-ers
A personal thanks from me to all those who came out tonight! It was a hot one ☀️ Kudos to Louise for not only visiting GoodGym Southwark during her house hunt session from York, but for running just shy of 6k in total in that heat! It was great to get the cardboard down as we transform the "Forest" garden. It will take a number of sessions over the coming months, but nothing this large is created overnight.
Thank You Simon
GoodGym is all about getting fit and doing good! We praise the runners/cyclists/walkers who come to get fit and help out, but we often forget about our task owner. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Simon for arranging this monthly session. It's getting there slowly and GoodGym Southwark and Lambeth will help continue with the vision!
