Report written by Windsor and Maidenhead runner
6 Goodgymers turned out to banish those New Year hangovers, and help out at the community allotment. Diya, Kanika and Amy armed themselves with litter-pickers, hoops and bags, and set off around the car park and adjoining park to see how much litter they could find. It turned out the answer was quite alot! Meanwhile Kelley, Sheila and first-timer Kate (welcome!) took on the allotment tasks. It turns out that Kate is a bona fide horticulturist, so it was great to have her along to keep us on the straight and narrow. We had several beds that needed weeding, levelling and covering with membrane to keep those weeds at bay over the winter. Then it was time for a scavenger hunt to find objects to weigh the membrane down with to stop it blowing away. By the time we had finished, the litter-pickers had arrived back , weighed down with heavy bags. A great start to the New Year, and here's to many more fun GoodGym sessions in 2023!
The Maidenhead Community Allotment is run by a group of volunteers, who grow food to share with local residents, the users of the Boyn Grove Community and Resource Centre and Maidenhead Foodshare. They work with Men in Sheds, who are based on the same site. Men in Sheds is an initiative to combat loneliness by providing a space for men to connect and chat over practical tasks.
