12 GoodGym-ers ran over 11km to help at Surrey Docks Farm

On a grey and overcast evening in ‘summer’ 11 hardy Southwark runners met at the Old Spike Roastery in Peckham. Despite the threatening clouds they were here for the longest run that GGS do but probably one of the most rewarding tasks, especially if you like a good farm animal!

Animals!

It was great to see so many people, when I was covering in Southwark, and lovely to meet first timers Ali, Emma and Tarn! Well done for picking such a hard task to start with.

We had a quick intro going through the various ways you can do good with GoodGym and were lucky to be able to explain missions very directly as Beth was off to do a mission that night but had kindly joined us at the start to do some DBS checks and help out! You can check out what a mission is like by reading her report here.

Missions

With the briefing done, Helena was in charge of directions, all 10 of us headed out and went on our way towards Surrey Docks. Everyone worked really hard and Helena expertly led the way making sure that everyone knew where they were going and keeping the whole group together (thanks!).

When we were all gathered at the farm Kate (First time too – welcome!) and Lucia met us and we got on with our two tasks – chopping back some hedges which we then fed to the goats and sweeping one of the yards that goats roam around in! We realised we didn’t have that much time so everyone worked really hard to get everything done.

No train, no gain…actually lots of gain!

We had talked about splitting the group so those not confident running so far could get the train back but in the end everyone was really up for pushing themselves so six of us decided to run back to Old Spike whilst the remaining six lived nearby to the farm and so headed home from there!

A really rewarding night with a fabulous bunch of runners who put maximum effort into running and doing good...and a few of us went for a drink after too! Thanks to everyone for making my time in Southwark super fun and super easy…and the rain held off!
