Out of office party
2 GoodGymers made their way to help the Newsome Junior School in Huddersfield.

We met with Gordon who had been tasked by Newsome Junior School to create a usable forest school space within their grounds. When we arrived, lots of volunteers had already hacked back the brambles. Then Gordon showed us how to use a flint and steel to light a fire which we used to burn all of the brambles. We helped to trim some trees and used the branches to create a dead hedgerow which would be used to guide the children to the fire pit. Katrina, who Huddersfield GoodGymmers know from Berry Brow Infant school, sawed branches into five foot bits ready to be used as stakes as part of a dead hedgerow. Then Kati was let loose with a billhook, although she insisted on calling it a machete, to make a point at the end of each stake so that it could be bashed into the ground easily. While the fire was burning there was lots of activity, many of the volunteers were enjoying time out of the school office in the green playground. Sarah was taking charge of weaving willow and hawthorn branches between the stakes. Hard hats were donned as Darren and Gordon felled a leaning tree and then Ben was tasked with sawing the trunk into four foot lengths for later use as revetments for around the fire pit. Ben then proceeded to make a brew and check out the available snacks. A great day in the sun and fresh air was had by all.
