Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by John Shirley
It was a beautiful winter morning in Penn Road Gardens, Holloway. It was also the last Sunday of the month, so a large group of locals gathered to keep this award-winning space in good condition and looking attractive.
GoodGym were on hand to assist, from first-ever GoodGymmer Ivo, to Julie and her friend, who live bang in the middle of the borough and were attending their first task. (Julie's friend didn't officially sign up to the task, but we hope to see her again and award her the good deed).
Along with Benedetta, who's recently become a regular, the girls' green fingers were put to use on careful weeding, separating invasive garlic from more attractive growth, By the time they'd finished, two large baskets were full of the bright green weed.
Meanwhile, John and Ivo were helping to pile branches, leaves and cut-down plants into two large wooden compost bins. Since our last visit, the composting process has done its work, so the compost heaps had considerably reduced in size - but not for long.
Incredibly, with the help of a resident, we cleared the whole pile, Ivo shovelling away until the end to make sure it was all done.
Thanks for Benedetta for supplying the picture - my own phone was hiding down the side of the sofa.
We were the first community group to get a contract from Islington Council to maintain the garden at the end of our street, and have made it useable for the residents and a beautiful space for the community to enjoy
