Sheila and Gillian helped out at the community allotment. Gillian shovelled out the remainder of the compost heap, and wheel-barrowed it up to the spinach bed in several loads. Soon there was a good layer of the mulch on the unoccupied portion, and we covered it up with weed-suppressant membrane. Gillian did a great job, scavenging old bits of brick and wood to weight the membrane down. Sheila carried the bags of horse manure up to the long bed, and emptied the contents onto the surface. Some of it was nice and fresh and still steaming - Diya woud have loved it! We covered the bed up again, and left the worms to do their stuff over winter.
The Maidenhead Community Allotment is run by a group of volunteers, who grow food to share with local residents, the users of the Boyn Grove Community and Resource Centre and Maidenhead Foodshare. They work with Men in Sheds, who are based on the same site. Men in Sheds is an initiative to combat loneliness by providing a space for men to connect and chat over practical tasks.
