Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Claire Dunne
It was great to arrive at Canbury Gardens in the evening sunshine to see 2 new members waiting and raring to go.
We were there to help the friends of Canbury Gardens pick up the litter and move topsoil to feed the trees and shrubs in the gardens.
Trevor and Marilyn our task leaders split us into 2 groups top soil spreaders (Team A) and litter pickers (Team B) and off we went.
Team B - Jane and 2 magic helpers went with Marilyn the task owner and tackled the litter on the ‘nature triangle’ on Lower Ham Road. 4 sacks were filled including one sack of glass and cans which shall be recycled.
Team A started by breaking up the compacted topsoil (it has been delivered pre lockdown!) before putting it into the wheel barrows to distribute around.
Cathy got ahead of the rest of the team picking up the litter, bottle tops aplenty from the shrubs and trees. Petra and Livia did a fantastic job loading up the wheel barrows and distributing the soil while Claire and Adam raked it in.
Having cleared 2 piles of topsoil we still had time to clear a 3rd. So more shovelling, wheeling and raking and the trees and shrubs were all well fed.
We had had a wheelie good workout and just had time for a quick group pic before it was time to wheel the wheel barrows home for the night.
We hope to see Petra and Livia for their second mission soon.
We are transforming a disused gardeners' yard on the edge of Canbury Gardens, Kingston, into a community space for wildlife-friendly food-growing
