Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Southwark runner
With storm Alex in full swing, I wasn't sure if this afternoon's visit to our favourite farm was going ahead. I emailed in the morning to check if we were still wanted and, getting no reply, assumed we were good to go.
However, on arrival, I discovered that the lack of reply this morning was a sign, and our normal contact was off work isolating! Luckily the excellent Rachel stepped in last minute and found us something to do. I was quite relieved, having dragged 8 GoodGymers out in the rain from as far as Camden and Tower Hamlets!
The task today was to wade through a waterlogged field and weed it, since the plants growing were too nutritious for the donkeys and were giving them colic.
Everyone was really enthusiastic and got stuck right in. I suppose anyone coming out in such bad weather had to be dedicated!
We were well rewarded after an hour and a half of hard work, when Rachel took us on a personal tour of the farm. A real treat as the farm is still closed to the public. We even got cuddles with the goats and the ram-lambs!
The final treat was at the pop up cafe, where we headed just as they were closing. We did an extra good deed of helping them with their surplus sandwiches, pastries and sausage rolls. After some serious digging they were greatly appreciated.
Thanks everyone for coming out and being so enthusiastic in tough conditions. We did such a good job that Rachel is keen to have us back next week so watch this space.
Surrey Docks Farm is run by a charity and provides education for school children, young people and adults with learning difficulties. Our work helps with essential maintenance and helps them keep the farm operating.
