Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Richard Breakspear
On a spooky rainswept day seven Goodgym runners coven-ed at The Haven. Despite much talk of cauldrons it turned out we would actually have to do the physical hard work ourselves.
The task? To level a piece of ground for a Tai Chi space at The Haven. The community garden here provides a space for the benefit of those recovering from drug and alcohol problems and improving mental health.
The grass had been pre-cleared and the required change in levels marked out: dig down 30cm at the top end, use this soil to raise the bottom end 30cm. Might have been easier if it wasn’t so soggy!
Regardless, the team set to work. Between them, Alex-‘is this pile getting bigger?’ (Sisyphus), Danica the Boulder Chopper, Rosie the mud lark, sexy surfer witch Paul, Richard-‘how deep can I dig this?’-B, Alice-‘did someone shovel mud at me?!’, and Richard-‘shovel-meister’-G made short work of the shifting.
Warm and content at completing the task, the soaked-through and mud-caked team ran off into the rain to their homes for some warm showers.
The Haven offers people who have issues around their mental health and/or drug/alcohol misuse their own safe space where they can relax, socialise and be involved with activity's such as gardening, art, sculpture, woodworking and nature conservation. The Haven is a service user led project- everybody involved has the opportunity to plan, develop and maintain the project
