Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Kash
On Friday after work, Sevan and Kash decided to ditch the usual movie night and go on their own adventure in Southall. They ran from Ealing alongside the canal to visit Mr A, a lovely gentleman who always smiled and offered the GoodGymers tea and fruit. Mr A wanted to replace his old divan bed with a new metal-frame bed that had arrived at his house. The problem was that the new bed was in pieces.
Sevan and Kash took the divan bed and placed it outside the house by the bins. There was no return. They had to build Mr A's new bed successfully - otherwise, the gentleman would have nowhere to sleep!
"What if the new bed has missing parts?"
The bed panels and the bolts were packed exceptionally neatly and numbered with stickers. Nothing seemed to be missing, apart from three legs. Yes, there were just three legs mentioned in the instructions. Spoiler: the other parts that the bed was supposed to stand on were called posts. After a moment of panic said legs were uncovered in a small cardboard box hidden inside a big cardboard box.
The GoodGymers worked in parallel to build the headboard and the footer thanks to Sevan's clever plan to bring his own set of Allen keys. Each person in the duo had their own approach to flatpack furniture assembly.
"I'm going to leave the bolts loose. That's what the instructions say. There must be a reason for it." Kash said.
"I'll tighten my bolts, otherwise, everything will keep moving. We can always loosen the bolts later." decided Sevan.
The frame the pair built looked a bit slanted, so loosening a few bolts was inevitable.
"I'll never tighten the bolts right away in a bed again - at least not in a bed with a metal frame." concluded Sevan.
It was the time to attach the middle legs, but only two of them, so the third leg was left unattended. When the GoodGymers finally moved to the final stage, affixing the slats to the frame, they uncovered that the third leg was still not connected which didn't feel right. Indeed - Kash hadn't been following the instructions as closely as she had claimed and had missed the step of attaching the third leg! It was just the right moment to fix that before she would get trapped underneath the slats. The last phase seemed easy as attaching the slats didn't require any screws. The bothersome part was inserting plastic plugs next to the slats, which was completed fast thanks to Sevan's superior thumb strength.
Mr A didn't mind that the task took two hours and was very appreciative of GoodGymers' work. Sevan and Kash accepted bananas as a token of gratitude and left happy that Mr A would sleep tight that night.

Thank you to the whole team at GoodGym, especially Kash and Sevan. I am delighted the task was completed on behalf of Mr A. This is an excellent resource for vulnerable people living in the borough.
