Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Derby runner
25th January is St Dwynwen's Day. She’s the patron saint of lovers, so a group of us braved the snow, and showed our love for our local environment by clearing up some unsightly litter.
Social distancing was definitely adhered to; we were from the GoodGym regions of Liverpool, Derby and Portsmouth, and to confuse things, we weren’t all collecting litter on home turf!
Gwyn and Tracey did an early run to scout out the best place to collect litter, and walked back later armed with a bin liner and rubber gloves. There wasn’t a huge amount of litter on the cycle path itself, but the layby and bus stop right next to it were quite a different story…
Judy did her litter pick in two parks close to her Mum's home in Eastbourne and collected half a bag full. Her most notable find was an abandoned toy unicorn!
Pauline walks to and from work twice a week along the Bridgewater Canal, which is a lovely way to start and end her day. There are always lots of birds on the water. After recent heavy rain, a ditch that runs alongside the canal path became flooded, covering the path. With it came years of discarded bottles, cans and other rubbish that had been thrown into the ditch. As the ditch water receded, the litter was left behind on the path. Along with her dogs, she walked almost 3 miles to the site, cleared part of the path, and then walked back home. Their plan is to return to do more litter picking, until the path is clear for users, and the birds can swim safely.
Hope this makes you smile.
