Share the love

Sam was back after two weeks away on annual leave. He brought some Thai snacks to share with the group as everyone poured into Old Spike Roastery.

There was meant to be a newbie coming to tonight's group run, but she's didn't show up and Sam knew he would be meeting Emma and Vic at the task, so he started his GG speech which detailed all the amazing community missions on offer this weekend. Since it was a longer group run to the task, he opted out of a warm-up as he knew our bodies would get warm over the course of the 3.7k run.

We did the ice-breaker question inside the cafe as there was no warm-up, so Sam's ice-breaker question tonight, was to do with the World Cup as it has just started: Which team (a part from England) will you be supporting?

We had some who didn't know which team was in the World Cup with wild guesses like Italy....too soon...but some had odd countries due to their sweepstakes like South Korea.... Argentina and Brazil were popular choices too.

Swift with sticks

After running through the busy Rye Lane and the darkness of Surrey Canal path, we arrived at Galleywall Nature Reserve where Emma, Alan, Jane and Sophie were waiting for us to give us instructions of the tasks at hand. As Alan and Jane were telling us what tasks we had to do, Vic arrived. We split the tasks in two: Emma and Paulin took two wheelbarrows to start collecting leaves to add to the compost heap whilst Daryl and Nathan raked up the leaves in piles. The second team were part of the rebuilding of the "living wall" that surrounds Galleywall Nature Reserve. Sam and Vic collected the sticks whilst Clare and Katy cut the sticks on the sawhorse into more manageable sizes for Emma to put and store in the "living wall". Once this was done, Emma used chicken wire that had been cut by her before to lock in the sticks into the wall.

The 40 minutes of the task breezed by as a few GoodGymers were looking for tasks to do at the end.

We took a final group photo at Galleywall Nature Reserve for 2022 as we thanked Alan and the team for a great year!

Thank You to all the GG-ers

A personal thanks from me to all those who came out tonight! It's getting colder and this run in particular was longer, so thank you for sticking with it. The tasks were done quickly and efficiently as everyone got stuck in. Thank you!

Thank You Alan and Sophie

GoodGym is all about getting fit and doing good! We praise the runners/cyclists/walkers who come to get fit and help out, but we often forget about our task owner. I would like to take this opportunity to thank AIan and Sophie for giving us tasks to do in the dark of Galleywall Nature Reserve! It's been a great year helping out here and we will continue the great work in 2023!

The Galleywall Nature Reserve is a small plot of land which has been owned by Southwark Housing for decades. It was used by the adjacent Galleywall School for some time before the school closed. It has been maintained by a group of volunteers, the Friends of Galleywall Nature Reserve, since 2004, under an ongoing long-term agreement with the council.
