Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by David Snutch
-So, we were meant to be cleaning the van at The Real Junk Food Project but alas - on the day of our task, the old girl failed her MOT so our good friend Anna at the RJFP had to come up with an alternative. She had been slaving in the kitchen all day making pancakes and the floor had taken a bit of a "battering" so "how do you fancy cleaning our kitchen instead?" she asked.
Imagine our disappointment at not having to work outdoors in near freezing conditions!!! - Instead we had to suffer a war spacious kitchen with lots of natural light and oodles of clothes mops hot soapy water and cleaning products - how would we cope??? Errr, after about a milisecond of thought we readily accepted the alternative and what a great task it turned out to be. Definitely up there in the "Carlsberg" league
We were 3 regulars down due to holidays and a last minute attack of the lurgy but we still had an excellent number, and as it turned out, just about perfect for the task.
It was the 6 month anniversary of our launch - 25+ tasks in the bag, who can believe it and to celebrate we did the step up warm up routine in Bede Park just for good measure. As Jim remarked "it was a bit warmer the last time"
With the RJFP being right on our doorstep we started with a 2k loop around the streets, my word its busy round there now all the students are back. With a pretty even paced group we all stuck together and arrived at the task about 20 minutes after setting off.
Our taskmaster Anna (who also plans to join us soon at GG) greeted us and explained what needed doing. Basically she said, "clean the walls, floors and tidy anything you think needs doing"
In seconds - GG Leicester sprang into action. The group really is just a joy to lead as they need hardly any steer, they just get to work. It was just a hive of activity, Jen found a pot of elbow grease and managed to clean an uncleanable saucepan, Frank took the lead on cleaning a 6 ring hob and with help from Leigh, Michaela and Elaine made a cracking job of the smaller of the two kitchen areas. In fact, Frank was sooooo professional about matters that he insisted I give him a ten minute warning when he needed to finish as he wanted to be sure he was on track with the task - I am blessed with a group of people who really do care.
Stu busied himself with mopping, Jim and Lee were on walls and tidying and Nicola attended to the window sills and frames.
Last but by no means least was snapper Mel on photo duty - as usual she beaten me to it with posting them to the FB site (to be fair, thats how I get to download them for this report so she always will!)
On first sight you may have said, it looks OK, not much needs doing, but when this lot had finished, what a difference half an hour and a dozen volunteers made. Anna's first comment when I called her through for inspection was "wow, you can even smell the clean"
With everything tidied away and a group photo taken it was off to Bede Park for some parlauf like reps - two groups, four pairs, even pacing was the name of the game. We did 3 sets of a 1/2k circuit and everyone worked up a bit of a sweat but all were well in control.
Short jog back, stretch and home for dinner. Just about perfect as GG group runs go. We are planning a social at the RJFP watch this space for details
